The central government has assured the small scale handloom units in India of full support for the current fiscal so that they could make superior quality products. Authorities promised the SME (small and medium enterprises) handloom units that handlooms will not be converted into powerlooms.
Panabaka Lakshmi, the minister of state for textiles in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha said, “Handloom units must focus on innovative designs, which cannot be replicated by powerlooms. They should also avail of the benefits of various schemes as initiated by the government in the recent past in order to develop their capacities.”
