Indian cricket captain, Mahendra Singh Dhoni forayed into the business world by launching his first fitness centre, SportsFit by MS Dhoni, in Gurgaon on Thursday. Co-founded by Dhoni’s business manager, Arun Pandey as chief mentor, SportsFit World Pvt. Ltd, plans to set up 200 gyms in next five years through an investment of Rs 2,000 crore in the venture.
CFO of SportsFit, Vijay Gupta present at the launch said, “In five years we plan to open 200 gyms and in the first half of 2012 we will have four gyms up and running, the next being at Ambience mall in Vasant Kunj New Delhi, Chandigarh and Faridabad.”
The company will be running SportsFit gyms on lease basis for initial months. “We have planned expansion through franchising model for next 5 years,” said Pankaj Guliani, CEO, SportsFit on future expansion plans.
The company is also looking to open international centres in markets like Australia, Middle East, Singapore and the UK.
SportsFit aims to revolutionise the way Indians perceive a fitness regime and to encourage fitness for all. “Through SportsFit, we want to educate people on how good our body is and what it can and should be able to do. We want Indians to be ‘fighting fit', which means fit to do things that people need to do in their daily life,” said Dhoni.
Speaking on the brand and the vision ahead, Pandey said, “Dhoni is very excited about this project and his vision is to build a culture of fitness among the people of India. We at SportsFit are really looking forward to it as it will be one of its kind fitness centre offering top-of-the-line fitness programs tailored for specific goals and needs.”
The Gurgaon gym from SportsFit is a 25,000 sq. ft state-of-the art centre having all equipments and trainers hand-picked by Dhoni, himself.
